American Eagle

When opportunities arise at the last minute and there is no other option but to venture into the unknown, the strategy I follow is very simple; I look at the sky, close my eyes, take a deep breath and get down to work.  Cuando las oportunidades surgen de último momento y no queda otra opción más que la de aventurarse a lo desconocido, la estrategia que sigo es muy sencilla; miro al cielo, cierro los ojos, respiro profundo y pongo manos a la obra.

American Eagle Activation at the Akamba Festival

Activación de American Eagle en el Festival Akamba 

This is exactly what happened when I was presented with the opportunity to do a photo shoot for the clothing brand American Eagle. It was in the context of the first edition of the Akamba Festival, which was held in a tequila ranch owned by José Cuervo near the Pueblo Mágico of Tequila, in Jalisco. I was there thanks to my working relationship with the company AV3 Aerovisual, which was in charge of doing the aerial filming for an activation that this clothing brand would carry out during the whole day of the event. 

Lo anterior, fue justamente lo que sucedió cuando se me presentó la oportunidad de hacer una sesión de fotos para la marca de ropa American Eagle. Fue en el contexto de la primera edición del Festival Akamaba, el cual se realizó en un rancho tequilero propiedad de José Cuervo cercano al Pueblo Mágico de Tequila, en Jalisco. Estaba ahí gracias a mi relación de trabajo con la empresa AV3 Aerovisual, la cual estuvo encargada de hacer la filmación aérea para una activación que realizaría esta marca de ropa durante todo el día del evento.

Although at the beginning my job was only to document the work that AV3 would do for American Eagle, when we arrived at the location and introduced ourselves to the people in charge of the image and advertising of this brand in Mexico, from one moment to the next I was informed that the influencers and models would not take long to arrive and that in 30 minutes the photo shoot would begin.

Aunque en un inicio mi labor era sólo documentar el trabajo que haría AV3 para American Eagle, al llegar a la locación y presentarnos con las personas encargadas de la imagen y publicidad de esta marca en México, de un momento a otro se me informó que los influencers y modelos no tardarían en llegar y que en 30 minutos comenzaría la sesión de fotos.

Cuando el destino te toma por sorpresa

I can't even imagine the face I must have made because, at the moment they gave me this news, my stomach went to the floor; first of all I had very little experience doing fashion photography and much less with influencers, technically speaking I wasn't that well prepared and mentally, neither was I. Luckily I had rented a 100mm lens because I thought it could be useful to take pictures of the event.

Ni yo me puedo imaginar la cara que debí hacer porque, en el momento que me dan esta noticia, el estómago se me fue al piso; en primer lugar tenía muy poca experiencia haciendo fotografía de moda y mucho menos con influencers, técnicamente hablando no iba tan bien preparado y mentalmente, tampoco. De suerte había rentado un lente 100mm porque pensé que me podría servir para hacer fotos del evento.

Although at the beginning I was very nervous and pressured, since the American Eagle team were very demanding and were behind me all the time supervising, commenting and suggesting how to take the pictures, the truth is that the whole experience was very useful to me, as it allowed me to learn from people who are part of that scene, working with international companies.

A pesar de que en un inicio estuve muy nervioso y presionado, ya que la gente de publicidad de American Eagle eran muy exigentes y estuvieron todo el tiempo detrás de mi supervisando, comentando y sugiriendo cómo hacer las fotos, la verdad es que toda la experiencia me sirvió mucho, ya que me permitió aprender de quienes se mueven en esa escena, trabajando con empresas internacionales.

Confianza para avanzar, disfrutar el momento y aprender

Once clients, influencers and models began to approve of my work, confidence returned and I began to enjoy the experience more, which included photos during the day in the structure that American Eagle had set up for its activation, as well as during the night, where dancers and models from Guadalajara participated.

Una vez que los clientes, influencers y modelos empezaron a aprobar mi trabajo, la confianza regresó y fue cuando comencé a disfrutar más de la experiencia, la cual incluyó fotos durante el día en la estructura que había montado American Eagle para su activación, así como durante la noche, donde participaron bailarines y modelos de Guadalajara.

It took me a long time to publish these photos and to share this story. Now that I have the opportunity to look back at the experience, I am very happy to be able to do some editing updates, giving them a more personal touch, without losing the essence of what the client wanted to transmit.

Tardé mucho en publicar estas fotos y en compartir esta historia, ahora que tengo la oportunidad de retomarlas, me alegra mucho hacer algunos ajustes de edición con lo el conocimiento que ahora tengo, dándoles un toque más personal, sin que pierdan la esencia de lo que en este momento el cliente buscaba transmitir.
