Zimapán, Hidalgo y el Royal Spa

Zimapán is a Pueblo Magico located in the heart of the Sierra Gorda, a place that combines nature and colonial architecture. Founded in the 16th century, this municipality is an important part of our national history thanks to its mining wealth, the passing of the revolution, and its hydroelectric dam, one of the most important in Mexico.

Zimapán es un pueblo mágico ubicado en el corazón de la Sierra Gorda hidalguense, un lugar que combina naturaleza y arquitectura virreinal. Fundado en el siglo XVI, este municipio es parte importante de la historia nacional gracias a su riqueza minera, el paso de la revolución, y por su presa hidroeléctrica, una de las más importantes de México.

In this context is located the Royal Spa Hotel, one of the oldest and most recognized lodging complexes in the region, since its history dates back to the XVI century. The building, originally called Hotel Posada del Rey, was built in 1632 and later, in 1770, it was used as a lodge. Since its beginnings, the hotel has hosted celebrities from politics, art and show business.

En este contexto se encuentra el Hotel Royal Spa, uno de los complejos de hospedaje más antigüos y reconocidos de la región, ya que su historia se remonta al siglo XVI. El edificio, originalmente llamado Hotel Posada del Rey, fue construido en 1632 y más tarde, en 1770, se usó como albergue. Desde sus inicios el hotel ha recibido a personajes de la política, el arte y el espectáculo.

In this context, one of my first opportunities taking photos for hotels was when a friend of mine, Claudia Lea, whom I have known since the time at the University and who is also originally from Zimapán, Hidalgo, suggested me to do the catalog photography for the Royal Spa Hotel, she recommended me thanks to her long-standing relationship with the owners. I was very flattered by Claudia's invitation and for trusting that I could do the job, especially because it meant taking pictures of all the rooms, facilities, set-ups for special events, as well as food and beverages.

En este contexto, una de mis primeras oportunidades haciendo foto para hoteles fue cuando una amiga, Claudia Lea, a la que conozco desde la Universidad y quien además, es originaria de Zimapán, en Hidalgo, me propuso hacer la foto de catálogo para el Hotel Royal Spa, ella me recomendó gracias a su relación de muchos años con los propietarios. Yo me sentí muy halagado por la invitación de Claudia y por confiar en que podría hacer el trabajo, en especial porque significaba hacer fotos de todas las habitaciones, instalaciones, montajes para eventos especiales, así como de alimentos y bebidas.

This experience was everything you could expect from the perspective of a beginner photographer like myself at that time; on one hand I only had two weekends to get the material ready, I was alone most of the time I did the photoshoot, so I was setting up lights and carrying the equipment everywhere as well as taking pictures, and also, I had little time to deliver the final photos. However, the biggest challenge of this mission, was the fact that, actually, it was the first time I was doing much of what the client asked for, so this project was very useful to learn about the implications of this type of work, and how important it is to take chances as part of the process of personal and professional growth.

Esta experiencia fue muy completa; por un lado sólo tuve dos fines de semana para levantar el material, el registro lo hice solo, así que estuve acomodando luces y cargando el equipo a todos lados. También por el poco tiempo que tuve para hacer la entrega. Sin embargo, el mayor reto fue que en realidad era la primera vez que haría mucho de lo que se me estaba solicitando por partre del cliente, así que este proyecto sirvió mucho para aprender sobre las implicaciones de este tipo de trabajo, y de lo importante que es atreverse como parte del proceso de crecimiento personal y profesional.

I must confess that at times I felt as if someone was watching me, especially in the tavern area and in the spa. Besides, the hotel is huge, there were not many guests, and not many staff working during those days, so anything strange could suddenly make my hair stand on end. Although I tried to remain professional, I did think that I might catch something supernatural with my camera, but I didn't, which was a bit disappointing.

Debo confesar que en ocasiones sentí como si alguien me estuviera observando, especialmente en la zona de la taberna y en el spa. Si a eso, agregamos que el hotel es muy grande, no había muchos huéspedes y poco personal laborando, cualquier cosa extraña de repente me ponía los pelos de punta. Aunque traté de mantenerme profesional, si llegué a pensar de que quizás algo sobrenatural podría llegar a captar con la cámara, sin embargo no fue así, lo que fue un tanto decepcionante.
